Dr. Shakou Monica – Beat Bullying campaign coordinator
Dr. Shiakou Monica works as an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the European University Cyprus. Dr. Shiakou received her PhD degree in 2007 in educational psychology from the University of London, Birkbeck. Prior to this, she was trained at the Anna Freud clinic where she obtained her MSc in Psychoanalytic Developmental Psychology from UCL in 2003. In 2002 she graduated from the University of Sheffield with a BSc in Psychology. She also holds the title of Chartered Psychologists from the British Psychological Society and represents Cyprus in the commission “Psychology and Education” of the European Federation of Psychologists Association.
In recent years Dr. Shiakou has been working as an educational Psychologist mainly with elementary school children. She holds a Diploma to practice the occupation (registration number 140).
Her research field topics include school bullying, child obesity, childhood aggression and influence of children’s after school clubs in the development of children. She has published a number of articles in scientific journals.
She is also an active member of several non-profit associations where she offers volunteer services, either as a spokesperson in several events/conferences or as a professional psychologist.
Joseph Varughese – General Manager
Mr. Varughese has been the General Director of Hope for Children since 2008 and he is also a visiting lecturer at the Department of Social and Economic Sciences Comenius University in Slovakia.
In 2003 he received a BA in Philosophy and Education. He then acquired a Masters in Social Work and continued with a Masters degree in International Relations. As a social worker he holds a license to exercise the profession of Social Work in the Republic of Cyprus by the Council of Professional Social Workers Registration Cyprus (license number 446/01-07-2010).
Through the organization, Mr. Varughese is the national coordinator- representing Cyprus for the first time at Separated Children in Europe Program – SCEP, the European Juvenile Justice Observatory, the European Network for Guardian Institutions and the European Network of Child Friendly Cities. He has contributed to the writing of the “Green Paper” in collaboration with the International Juvenile Justice Observation for the European Commission on the theme of “EU Criminal Justice Legislation in the field of detention”.
Mr. Varughese is the coordinator of the Global Network for the return of unaccompanied minors -Network for Children’s Rights as well as Senior Advisor to the Annexes of Hope for Children in India and Hungary.
Andria Neocleous – Consultant
Ms Andria Neocleous is a consultant and board member of the organization Hope for Children. In 2007 she received a Masters in Criminology from the University of Surrey in England and had previously studied at the University of the Aegean in Mytilini gaining a degree in Sociology.
She has a four-year experience in the writing and implementation of European programs, in counseling victims of domestic violence and victims of trafficking and has participated in research programs regarding issues of human trafficking, methods of rehabilitation of torture victims and human rights. Ms Neocleous has also worked as a consultant at the social rehabilitation of torture Victims Unit providing social support and rehabilitation to victims of torture.
As part of her service at Hope for Children, she has been involved in providing support and counseling to unaccompanied minors and specializes in designing interventions and programs for the organization.
Ms. Marianna Ellina acquired her BA in Theatre Studies studying at one of the best schools in Europe and continued with postgraduate studies at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco (USA) receiving a Masters in Cinematography. In recent years she has worked in the entertainment sector both in Europe and the United States.
Having as her mentor Jamie Metzger, who is well known for his work in the films Transformers, Pirates of the Caribbean, 90210 etc, Ms Ellina has received training from him on the specialization of DIT (Digital Imaging Technician).
Ms Ellina has worked for international companies like Nike, Reebok, Nintendo, Trend Micro, Chevy and many others. Some of the films in which she has worked received local and international recognition. Also, in collaboration with other professionals she worked on various documentary productions in Cyprus, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Boston and Miami and had the privilege to work with established directors from the USA, Austria, Greece, Africa, Holland, etc.
